Merante Votes NO on Term Limit Extension
"We may have had a setback last night with the City Council approving the 4-4 year term extension for Mayor and Councilmembers but believe me the People of Yonkers will have the last word on this issue. The citizens who spoke in favor of this seemed to think this vote was about Mayor Mike Spano. It’s not. I consider Mike Spano a friend and he’s done many good things for Yonkers, but this is solely about a Term Limit law that was enacted by voters. Therefore, it should be ONLY voters who have the right to change it by a ballot referendum. I will not stop fighting for YOU and will work to get this referendum on the ballot in 2023. The voice of the people of Yonkers must be and will be heard!" - Anthony Merante
Councilmember Merante joined Yonkers residents who are working nurses in the NYC hospital system to show his support for their strike. Merante thanked these frontline workers who were there for us when hospitals were deluged with COVID-19 patients in the spring of 2020. NYC was the epicenter of deaths when Covid hit. Many nurses had sacrificed their own lives while caring for Covid patients. The NYC nurses strike has entered Day 2. NYSNA (New York State Nurses Association) says members had to strike because chronic understaffing leaves them caring for too many patients. The Councilman agreed with the sentiment express by many of the nurses "We love our job. We want to take care of our patients. But we just want to do it safely and in a humane way, where we feel appreciated”.
The Legislation and Codes committee of the Yonkers City Council met on Tuesday Jan 10th. The first item discussed addressed bolstering record keeping of catalytic converters as a method to deter their theft. Anthony Merante heads the committee, and he sponsored this legislation. His proposal comes in response to constituent feedback he has been receiving about an increase in catalytic converter theft in the recent year.
